How to Make Your Own Muslin Blanket

Making your own muslin blanket is a great way to create a custom, high-quality blanket for yourself or as a gift. Muslin fabric is lightweight and breathable, making it perfect for warm weather or as a light layer for cooler weather.  Muslin blankets are lightweight and breathable, making them a popular choice for swaddling newborns and as a general-purpose blanket. They are also versatile and can be used as a nursing cover, burp cloth, or even as a makeshift changing pad. While muslin blankets can be bought in stores, making your own can be a fun and rewarding project. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to make your own muslin blanket.

Materials Needed

  • Cotton muslin fabric (2 yards)
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Iron

Selecting the Fabric

When selecting muslin fabric for your blanket, consider the weight, color, and pattern. Muslin is typically sold in a variety of weights, ranging from lightweight to heavy. For a blanket, you'll want to choose a mid-weight muslin that is soft and comfortable. You can also choose a colorful or patterned muslin to add some personality to your blanket.

Measuring and Cutting the Fabric

Measure and cut your muslin fabric to the desired size for your blanket. A standard size for a throw blanket is around 50"x60". Make sure to add an additional 1/2" to 1" to each side for seam allowances. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure and mark your fabric, then cut using scissors or a rotary cutter on a cutting mat.

Sewing the Blanket

Fold the edges of your muslin fabric over 1/4" and press with an iron. Then, fold over an additional 1/4" and press again. Pin the edges in place, then sew around the edges of the blanket using a straight stitch. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching to secure the thread.

Wash and Iron the Fabric

The first step is to wash and iron the muslin fabric. This ensures that any shrinkage occurs before you start sewing and that the fabric is smooth and wrinkle-free. Wash the fabric in cold water and tumble dry on a low setting. Once dry, iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles.

Cut the Fabric

Cut the muslin fabric in half so that you have two equal pieces that measure 1 yard each. This will give you two blankets. Once you have cut the fabric, you can trim any uneven edges.

Pin the Fabric

Place the two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing each other. Pin the edges together, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. The pins will help keep the fabric in place as you sew.

Sew the Fabric

Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew the two pieces of fabric together along the edges, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Sew all four sides of the fabric, leaving a 4-inch gap on one side. This gap will be used to turn the blanket right side out.

Turn the Blanket Right Side Out

Carefully turn the blanket right side out through the gap you left in step 4. Use a chopstick or pencil to gently push out the corners. Once the blanket is right side out, use your fingers to smooth out any wrinkles.

Iron the Blanket

Iron the blanket to make sure it is smooth and flat. This will also help to close the gap where you turned the blanket right side out. Fold the edges of the gap in and press with the iron.

Topstitch the Edges

Topstitch around the edges of the blanket, about 1/4 inch from the edge. This will close the gap where you turned the blanket right side out and give the blanket a finished look.

Fold and Store

Fold the blanket neatly and store it in a safe place until you are ready to use it.

Making your own muslin blanket is a simple and easy project that can be completed in just a few hours. By following these steps, you can create a custom blanket that is perfect for your needs. Muslin blankets are versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, so why not make a few to have on hand? With just a little time and some basic sewing skills, you can create a beautiful and functional blanket that will last for years to come.
